Not everyone desires a phone with all the fancy features embedded. Some wish simply to obtain a mobile phone that is both reliable and cheap. The LG Makalu is a basic but feature packed handset that gives you everything you really need, with a bit more added extra.

The LG Makalu is a stylish phone which fits into any pocket and packs a lot into it’s relatively small size which only weighs 95 grams.

The Nokia N96 is probably the most eagerly anticipated phone release of 2008 and Telecom 3. Due to the success of the N95, every N95 owner couldn’t wait for the N96 to hit the market. The handset is still a slide form factor, slightly heavier than its predecessor and a smoother finish with more curves to its body design.

The phone is almost similar to the N95 in terms of specification, so it’s a mystery why the device took so long to be released. Significant changes would be the upgrade of the Series 60 user interface from 3.1 to 3.2, an increase of the flash memory from 8GB to 16GB, and the addition of Live TV. The Live TV feature includes an integrated antenna and a DVB-H TV tuner, the Nokia N96 has been designed to allow you to watch TV on your phone. Many home users enjoy using the BBC iPlayer on their computer systems. It’s now possible to use the BBC iPlayer on the N96 which enables you to stream BBC TV and radio content on your phone.

The upgrade in the Series 60 user interface resulted in a more stable environment of the N96’s operating system. The rest of the system is pretty much the same as the N95 8GB. Built-in GPS navigation with the Nokia Maps application, which can be updated on Nokia’s website, digital camera on the phone is still 5 mega-pixels with the addition of Carl Zeiss lens and Tessar optics, video camera for recording and video calling capability, Wi-Fi internet connection, 2.8 inch display with 16 million colours – one of the largest screens available, 3G/HSDPA connection at 3.6Mpbs. Music player which supports all the common music formats (AAC/MP3/WMA etc.), a stereo FM radio with RDS and Visual Radio support, integrated hands free speaker, speaker voice dialling. The N96 has a full range of connectivity possibilities, with support of Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, Wireless LAN, TV-Out and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The memory upgrade to 16 GB with the support for microSD memory cards.

Although there’s not a whole lot of matters to discuss about this handset that hasn’t been covered in the N95 review, the phone is still a big improvement due to its upgraded OS, making the phone much faster and more reliable to use.

The LG Renoir was released at the end of October this year and is the replacement for the LG Viewty and is now available at Telecom 3. The Renoir, much like the Viewty, is a pioneering imaging device, nicknamed after the famous impressionist painter. It boasts an 8 mega-pixel camera, and it pushes the highly capable photographic abilities of its predecessor to a new level.

The Renoir looks similar to the Viewty. It’s a flat touch screen phone that’s a little larger in size (108 x 55 x 14.5mm) and weighing in at 110g, giving the phone some weight for the user to hold the handset steady whilst taking pictures. The handset uses Haptic (vibration) feedback to confirm that you’ve pressed a “button” on the virtual screen, whether it’s the virtual onscreen keypad or QWERTY.

The phone still comes with many more upgraded features such as the camera capabilities. Equipped on this are a high quality Schneider-Kreuznach lens, autofocus, powerful xenon flash and new features such as face tracking and beauty shot. Xenon flash is a more powerful feature compared to the LED, and gives substantially improved after-dark shots. Beauty shot is an innovated feature that automatically detects faces, brightens them and removes spots and other imperfections. The phone also uses TouchShot, which enables you to use the touch screen to focus on a particular area of the shot and the shutter fires when you remove your finger from the screen. Result of all these key features means that the Renoir can take pictures which can be passed as printable quality, even though it’s not a dedicated digital camera. The Renoir also features an outstanding video camera too, capturing upto 120 FPS (frames per second) and also allowing you to playback your videos in slow-motion. 3G video calling is also supported.

The phone doesn’t only excel in camera capabilities, but video and music playback. The Renoir is the first phone to feature Dolby Mobile which processes its sound to enhance music, in particular by boosting the bass output. The music player can play all popular music formats (MP3, AAC, AAC+, & WMA) and has an inbuilt FM radio. Video player supports DivX and XVid formats so you can watch your downloaded files from the internet on your phone. With all these media files, the Renoir has 100MB of in-built memory and comes supplied with an 8GB microSD memory card which enables the user to store approximately 2,000 MP3 tracks or 15 DivX/XVid video files.

But there’s much more to the KC910 than just its camera. This is the first mobile to feature Dolby Mobile. This brand new technology from Dolby processes sound to enhance music, in particular by boosting bass output. The music player can play virtually all popular digital music formats including MP3, AAC, AAC+, AAC++ & WMA. It can also play back video in DivX and Xvid formats so that you can watch movies on your phone. An FM radio is built in too, so you have a very wide range of music and video options available.

Connectivity variety on the Renoir is impressive also. The 3G phone offers 7.2 Mbps HSDPA speeds, USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi enabled, so you can connect wirelessly to a home, office network or hotspots. All these connectivity options allows this device to formidably access the internet to browse the web, use the Assisted-GPS feature, check e-mail with it’s e-mail application which supports attachments. The document support allows you to view TXT, PDF, DOC, PPT & XLS.

The feature packed KC910 Renoir is a very impressive handset which does everything one could hope for. It’s also a strong candidate for phone of the year 2008.

The Samsung F480 Tocco (”Tocco” is the Italian word for “Touch”) is another touch screen model which is their third one this year, using the award winning Croix UI with haptics (vibration) for tactile feedback. The Tocco has a brushed metal finish and is supplied with a leather case to protect the handset from daily tear, the screen is just 2.8 inches and the phone is ultra slim at 11.6mm.

The Samsung Tocco sports a solid 5 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus, digital zoom, LED flash and a Tocco specific feature called the ‘Smile Shot’ which is a feature designed to detect when the subject is smiling before it takes a snap shot. The music player plays most file formats (MP3, AAC etc.) and a FM radio included. The Tocco also has a new feature called “Shazam” that also acts similar to Sony Ericsson’s TrackID service which identifies songs when you hold it to the music source. With this handset, comes with 240 mega-bytes of internal memory which can be expanded with another 8GB via a microSD memory card.

Another addition to the Tocco is the inclusion of a 3G connection. The 3G implementation uses HSDPA which connects at 7.2MB’s similar to most broadband connections.

In fact the Tocco is a brilliant platform for the mobile internet, with its big touch screen and dedicated Google application.

The Nokia E71, rival to the BlackBerry series phones is available from Telecom 3. The near fully functional handset comes equipped with QWERTY keypad and push e-mail systems which are all displayed on a 240 x 320 pixel screen of 2.36 inches.. Nokia have improved their user-friendliness and power to their “E” brand of phones also which comes to compete against the BlackBerry phones whom have been the sole solution to business/corporate users in the past. The E71 uses some extra one-touch keys for the primary uses of the handset (Calender/Contacts/E-Mail). Navi Key works just like the mouse pad section on a laptop to provide accelerated scrolling up and down on the screen when browsing through the internet/e-mails/messages which is Nokia’s solution over the BlackBerry Bolds trackball.

Messaging on the E71 is very well adept. The device supports IMAP, POP and SMTP e-mail protocols as well as Nokia Intellisync Wireless E-mail. Attachments are supported and the QuickOffice GPP also to allow the user to view and/or edit word processing documents/spreadsheets/power point presentation. The E71 comes fully equipped for security, with a keypad lock, remote lock and encryption for data stored in memory or on the memory card. Full support for Virtual Private Networks is provided.

Multimedia features are as followed. A 3.2 mega-pixel camera with autofocus and flash functionality which also allows you to record videos in MPEG4 or 3GP formats a resolution of 640×480 at 22 fps a second or 320×240 (QVGA) at 30 fps. Music player capable of playing all common formats and has a FM radio inbuilt.

Like many smartphones, the E71includes Assisted GPS satellite navigation, with the Nokia Maps application pre-installed. The built-in browser can handle XHTML, Javascript, stylesheets and Flash, so is able to display most websites correctly. For connectivity, this handset supports bluetooth 2.0 (with Enhanced Data Rate), micro USB, WLAN and even Infrared. The WLAN connection can be used to make VoIP calls. A 2.5mm Nokia headphone socket is provided, so you can plug in a compatible headset, but it would have been nice to have a universal 3.5mm jack, like the BlackBerry Bold has. The phone also features FOTA (firmware updatable over the air.) A comprehensive suite of personal organiser functions is included.

Everything you need to organise yourself, communicate on the go, send/recieve data is on this handset.

The phone resembles the W910i which was released a year ago. It looks the same on the outside and inside with identical list of features, except, with an upgraded camera and the wrinkles which made the W910i unstable ironed out. The firmware has been extensively upgraded to make the phone very reliable and a joy to use which is why we now have it in our Telecom 3 product catalogue.

The W595 has the “Shake Control” that lets you change to a new track just by shaking the handset slightly. The motion sensor also auto-rotates between portrait and landscape.

The walkman player has received plenty of praise in the past, and this is the latest version 3.0. You can create and update your playlists, shuffle songs, randomised, equalise, etc. and album art can be displayed when music is playing. Supplied software along with connectivity, allows your music to be transferred or ripped from music and can be transferred between phone to PC or vice versa easily. The music audio quality is excellent, whether it’s being played through the loud speaker, a conventional stereo headset or a Bluetooth stereo headset. The Mega Bass feature helps enhance the bass frequencies to give the user a stronger bass sound for a fuller music experience. In addition, the phone also comes with a FM radio with RDS.

The W595 is a great music phone, as you’d expect. The Walkman player has received plenty of praise before, and this is the latest version 3.0. You can create and manage playlists, shuffle songs, equalise, etc, and album art can be displayed when music is playing. The supplied software lets you transfer music from PC to phone, and rip music from CD’s. The W595 has excellent audio quality, either through the loud stereo speakers, or via a conventional stereo headset or a Bluetooth stereo headset. The Mega Bass feature helps to enhance bass frequencies for a fuller sound. In addition to the music player, there’s an FM radio with RDS.

With all these music features, you’ll want the space to store all your files. The built-in memory is only 4 mega-bytes but it comes with a 2 giga-bytes memory card which is enough for about roughly 500 MP3 tracks. If this however, is not enough, then the phone supports memory cards of up to 8 giga-bytes.

The camera has been upgraded to 3.2 and can also record video, and video calling is possible on a 3G network with the front mounted video camera.

The W595 is a brilliant phone. It’s what the W910i should have been and everyone that has picked up the phone hasn’t managed to put it down.

The Sony Ericsson C905, unlike it’s predecessor (Sony Ericsson C902), is a slide form factor phone with a lovely square/curve design which recaptures the moment by re-implementing the xenon flash which is more powerful than the normal LED to allow users whom enjoy the nightlife the pleasures of making high quality snaps to reduce the chances of night photography to end up blurred and grainy in contrast. The camera packs in more tools and features to allow the tweaking of images which appeals to camera enthusiasts, but at the same time, is easy to produce good looking images regardless if you understand the principles of photography.

Camera features include 8 mega pixels, autofocus with face detection, an image stabiliser and red-eye reduction which have been adopted from the C902. The C905 brings a new feature called ‘Smart Contrast’ which allows the auto level/auto balance of brightness and colour/contrast. Best Pic technology is also included as a feature on this phone which takes 7 pictures in 1 snap to allow you to choose the best picture.

Along with the camera features, the phone also contains many other goodies. Assisted GPS for your satellite navigation which has Google Maps embedded along with a Way finder Navigator software bundled. This gives you turn by turn instructions from A to B, suitable for car or walk journeys. Geo-tagging of photos is also part of the GPS feature which allows you to identify points of interest by taking a picture and marking a spot on the map identifying the location.

A fully functional media player is included, even though this isn’t a walkman phone, it still allows superb music playback allowing us to play the common formats (MP3/AAC). The music player also includes album art within your music playlist, TrackID which identifies a song just by holding the phone up to the source. The phone doesn’t come with a huge amount of memory, but it’s easily expandable with a memory micro stick supporting up to 8 GB’s. Mobile e-mail is quite a premium feature available to business phones, the C905 features ActiveSync, which synchronises with your Microsoft Exchange mail server to allow push e-mail. Auto rotate feature switches display of your phone depending on if you turn your phone from portrait and landscape mode.

Connectivity such as Wi-Fi to connect to the hotspots, USB to connect easily to your computer to transfer data/media, Bluetooth for your data transfer and peripherals, 3G connection for high-speed data transfer/internet.

The world eagerly waited for the C905 as the successor of the Sony Ericsson C902 and wasn’t disappointed. Telecom 3 are proud to have such a robust, feature packed phone available.

Silly question yeah?

Well, the base of operation within a mobile phone is simply for the functionality of sending and recieving phone calls, but of course, this is not how our choice of mobile brand and model is influenced nowadays. I myself have a Nokia 3120 on Pay as you go. It does the basic things that I need it for, which are: recieving/emergency calls (not a heavy chatter), the occasioanl text message and finally, MP3 player to and from work. My very first phone was a 3210 which in terms of what I used it for, didn’t have a music player.

I am looking to invest on a new phone as many of you are, but what do we base our choice on? Seeing as I’m in a mobile phone enviroment here in Telecom 3, features are coarsing through my brain. Apart from the many inclusive minutes/texts, basic camera, text messaging capabilities, here’s what I’ve come up with.

Entertainment: As a secondary function similar to the Nintendo DS/MP3 player and a portable DVD player rolled into one, a multimedia portable machine…everything that you could ever want to keep you entertained. Specifications to consider; what formats your videos/music will play (MP3 music, DivX/MPEG-4/WMV video bwing the most common), sound features (MegaBass, TrackID Recognition), games (downloadable), screen size, resolution of the screen, size memory (is it expandable?) and connectivity which is important for your data transfer.

Camera: Nothing is better than capturing the moment on camera. Although camera functionality is inherited in all mobile phones today, some are specialised in this aspect. The number of megapixels is only one characteristic relating to the quality of a camera, or the actual quality of a photo it is capable of producing and the resolution it will be captured at. The next part would be the quality of lens, focus functionality, type of flash and camera modes. Other things to be aware of is the memory (expandable?) and connectivity which will be methods on data transferring and possibly 3G coverage for internet access to the social networks for direct image transfer to your blog.

Business: Your goal here is to be reachable wherever and whenever. Being able to have access to information with connectivity via 3G for internet access to your e-mail and be able to read documents and spreadsheets thanks to the in-built office applications available to your mobile phone. Need a GPS device? Why not have one included in your phone.

As simplistic a person I am, my choice when I eventually get round to it will be mainly for camera functionality to capture things that I find facinating, nights out and holidays. What do you want the most our of your mobile?

Camera phone lovers, brace yourself! The Sony Ericsson C902 is here to stay at Telecom 3. The ‘C’ is the newer range of the Cyber-Shot series which replaced the ‘K’ series. As everyone knows, the Cyber-Shot range of phones have been very successful and this phone lives up to our expectations. The phone comes to us in candy bar form, at a very slim 10.5mm, keypad and navigation buttons have gone back to classic design of being blocky keys which make them easy to pressand the model comes in black or red metallic finish. The side of the screen contains buttons to activate between still and video, enable autofocus, flash and other camera settings. The screen however, due to all these included shortcuts, is 2 inches but still has the same resolution as most other mobiles (240×320 with 256k colours) with a bright and sharp display and the device weighs in at 107grams.

The main feature is of course, the camera. It is concealed beneath a mini sliding cover. When you slide the cover open, the phone enables camera mode. The camera is, as stated earlier with the side buttons has autofocus and flash. The autofocus function has face-detection software which automatically focuses on the face of a picture. Image stabaliser software to minimise blur in low lighting areas, BestPic feature which can automatically take 9 pictures in a second to allow the user to choose the best picture out of the 9, Accelerometer senses which way up the photo is being held and will automatically rotate your pictures into portrait or landscape mode.

3G connection enabled (HSDPA) network enabled for the phone to make video calls. A new ‘Storyteller’ application lets you create presentation from the pictures and dynamically upload them onto social networks such as Bebo/Facebook. The media player is fully featured, includes Sony’s MegaBass for spetacular sound quality, PlayNow feature lets you personalise your phone by downloading a MP3 ringtone and/or use MP3/AC ringtones you transfer onto your phone. TrackID recognition to identify a song by holding your phone near the source, FM radio, can use your own stereo headset or use an optional Bluetooth stereo headset, large 160mb of internal memory which can expand up to 4gb via Memory Stick Micro to store up to 1,000 music tracks, USB and Bluetooth connectivity to transfer music, images between phone and PC via the simplicity of Drag and Drop.

This phone as fantastic as camera phones go, for more information, contact our Telecom 3 sales team.

I must admit, this is probably the sexiest candy bar designed mobile phone I’ve seen! The Nokia 6500 Classic is a very slim candy bar phone at a light weight of 94grams, sleek aluminium casing and is available for free with a majority of contracts from our Telecom 3 sales.

Supplied with a huge 1gb of internel memory, the Nokia 6500 Classic, with it’s lovely looks, comes with 3G support, a standard 2 megapixel camera, competent music player, a video camera and good connectivity via Bluetooth and miniUSB to easily transfer your music from PC to phone or alternatively, due to it’s 3G connection, is able to share it’s media easily.

One of the most advanced Nokia N-Series products that have been available here at Telecom 3, is the Nokia N95. The N95 released back in 2007 March has been a very popular product that has caused a lot of hype among the majority due to it’s impressive multimedia features.

The N95 is a 3G smartphone in a slide form factor which goes in two directions (one for your video/music controls and the other for your keypad) that is no taller than your typical candy bar phone, however, is slightly more chunky in size. The screen is 2.6 inches which is pretty big in mobile phone terms, 16 million colours, ambient light detector to adjust the screens brightness for whatever your surrounding conditions are, you’ll see what’s happening on your screen.

The camera on the phone is one of the most impressive feats. It’s the first phone to hit the 5 megapixel mark which is identical to many digital cameras that come with Carl-Zeiss optics and Tessar lenses to create sharper images with auto-focus, flash and lens capabilities. It can also record 30 frame rates of video at VGA resolution of 640×480 with stereo audio. There’s a second camera located at the front which is used for making video calls.

Another one of the N95’s amazing features is the GPS (Global Positioning System). No need for the standalone device anymore, communicating with satalites to pin-point your position on the map, whether you’re travelling on foot or in car, never get lost again.

For your multimedia uses, the N95 plays a majority of the common music and video formats, includes a stereo FM radio, integrated handsfree speaker, speaker independent voice dialling, fast G3 data transfer for internet/e-mail access. In terms of connectivity, the versitility is tremendous, supporting USB 2.0, Infrared, Bluetooth, WiFi, TV-Out and Mic-Out. The firmware that comes with the N95 a very robust so it’s a very reliable phone alltogether and will appeal to anyone and can even be addictive to use due to it’s massive amount of capabilities which can be further expanded due to internet connection for updated software/games and memory can be upgraded to fill your phone with even more media.

For more enquiries, our Telecom 3 sales team can assist you with whatever aid you need.
